Heras fence panel size and which banner fits

A standard Heras fence panel size is typically about 3.5 m wide and 2 m high (roughly 11 ft 6 in × 6 ft 7 in), but panels vary between manufacturers and hire companies, so measure the ones on your site before ordering a banner. Our full-panel banner is 10 ft 10 in × 5 ft 11 in (3300 × 1800 mm), which leaves room for ties all round on a typical panel. This guide explains how to measure a panel and which banner size fits.

What a typical Heras fence panel size looks like #

“Heras” is used across the UK for any temporary mesh fence panel: a welded wire mesh inside a steel tube frame, standing in heavy feet (often concrete or rubber blocks) and joined to its neighbours with couplers. The common size is about 3.5 m × 2 m, but you will also meet:

• panels a little narrower or shorter than 3.5 m × 2 m, depending on the maker;
• anti-climb panels with a tighter mesh, which are often the same outside size;
• older or mixed hire stock, where one run can include panels of different sizes.

The feet raise the panel slightly off the ground, and the couplers sit on the uprights where two panels meet. Neither changes the panel itself, but both affect where you can put ties.

How to measure a panel for a banner #

You need a tape measure, a notepad and ideally a second person. Check the Heras fence panel size on a panel the banner will actually go on, not one lying in a stack.

1. Frame width: from the outside of one upright tube to the outside of the other.
2. Frame height: from the top of the bottom rail to the top of the top rail.
3. Clear space for ties: check where the couplers sit on the uprights and whether anything (signs, lights, hoarding clips) is already fixed to the panel.
4. Which side faces the public: the banner goes on the outside face, with cable tie heads turned in towards the site.

Write the measurements down in millimetres. Choose a banner at least 100 mm smaller than the frame in each direction, so every eyelet sits inside the frame where a tie can reach a tube or the mesh. Our general guide on how to measure for a banner covers other fences and walls.

The full-panel size comes as Heras fence mesh banners (from £178.44, 4 working days on Express, 6 on Standard, 8 on Saver) and as Heras fence PVC banners (from £65.42 for the smallest size, 2 working days on Express, 4 on Standard, 6 on Saver). Mesh or PVC for your panel size

The bigger the banner compared with the Heras fence panel size, the more wind it catches. A 3300 × 1800 mm solid PVC banner turns almost the whole panel into a sail, which is why mesh is the usual choice for full panels on open sites. Covering a long run of panels #

For a run of fencing, order one banner per panel rather than one long banner across several. Each panel moves on its own as the wind pushes it, and the couplers let the joints flex. A banner spanning a joint gets pulled at the eyelets every time the panels shift. A row of matching banners, one per panel, also gives you the option of repeating the same message or telling a short story along the fence (name, then service, then phone number).

Count the panels facing the road or footpath and order that many. Quantities are priced on the product page, and the price per banner usually drops as the quantity goes up.

Crowd barriers are a different size #

Steel crowd barriers used at events are much lower and shorter than a Heras panel. Our crowd barrier banners come in 7 ft 3 in × 2 ft 7 in (2200 × 800 mm), 6 ft 7 in × 3 ft 3 in (2000 × 1000 mm) and 7 ft 7 in × 3 ft 3 in (2300 × 1000 mm). Barrier designs vary, so measure the frame in the same way before choosing.

Artwork and delivery for panel-sized banners #

Keep text and logos at least 50 mm in from every edge so hems and eyelets do not cut into them. A banner this size is read from the road, so keep it to a headline, one line of detail and a phone number or web address. Safety comes before size #

Whatever the Heras fence panel size, adding a banner changes how the fence behaves in wind. Ask whoever installed or hired the fence whether panels carrying banners need extra feet, ballast or stays.
