PVC or mesh banner: which do you need?
How solid PVC, mesh and PVC-free banners differ, and which one to choose for fences, shop fronts and exposed sites.
Most outdoor banners are either solid PVC or mesh. They look similar on screen but behave very differently on a fence in the wind. This guide explains the difference so you can pick the right one first time.
The short answer
Choose a PVC banner for shop fronts, walls, railings, indoor use and anywhere the banner is fixed flat and fairly sheltered. Choose a mesh banner for fences, scaffolding, Heras panels and open sites where wind can hit the banner hard. If you want to avoid PVC, PVC-free banners are a good choice for indoor and short-term use.
How the three materials compare

Why wind matters
A solid banner on an open fence acts like a sail. In strong wind the load goes into the eyelets and cable ties, and a banner that is tied too tightly or too loosely can tear at the corners. Mesh lets a good part of the wind through, so it is the safer choice for anything that stays up for weeks on an exposed site. If a PVC banner has to go somewhere windy, fit it with plenty of ties, keep it taut and take it down before a storm.
Reading distance and detail
Because mesh has open holes, fine text and thin lines can look broken up when you stand right next to it. From a few metres away the holes disappear and the print reads as a solid image. For a banner that people read close up, such as a reception or event banner, PVC gives the crispest result. For a fence banner seen from the road, mesh is fine.
Finishing: hems, eyelets and ties
- Hemmed edges fold and weld the edge of the banner so it is stronger. We recommend hems for anything going outside.
- Eyelets are fitted around the edge and at every corner. Metal eyelets are stronger than plastic ones on long-term outdoor banners.
- Cable ties can be added in bags so you have what you need on the day.
Keep text at least 5 cm in from the edge so hems and eyelets never cut into it. Our artwork guidelines explain bleed and safe areas in more detail.
