Labels and signs for electricians

The labels and signs for electricians that earn their place are the ones you leave behind on every job: PAT pass and fail labels, RCD test notices, periodic inspection (EICR) labels, circuit charts and warning labels at the board. Add voltage warning signs for plant rooms, a van magnet and a stock of NCR job sheets, and that covers most of what an electrical business prints. Labels and signs for electricians at the consumer unit #

The board is the first place the next electrician, or the homeowner, looks. Every label below carries your company name, phone number and your scheme or registration number as plain text, so it does its safety job and tells the customer who to ring.

For a one-off board change, choose the write-on circuit chart (lines for Way 1 to Way 6) and fill it in on site. If you are fitting identical boards across a block of flats, type the circuit list in the extra wording box and every label in that order prints the same. The chart sits alongside the certificate and schedule of test results; it does not replace them.

PAT testing labels #

PAT Test Pass labels carry “PAT Tested” and “PASSED” with write-on lines for date tested, next test due, tester and asset number. The 51 × 25 mm size fits kettles, chargers and power tools; 62 × 33 mm gives your logo and phone number more room on desktop computers and larger appliances. PAT Test Fail labels come in the same two sizes, printed bright red, and go next to the plug where the user sees them before switching on. Both start from £27.22 a pack, as do Asset Labels in the same sizes if a client wants every item numbered.

Paper or polypropylene for write-on labels

• Matt paper: takes a ballpoint or permanent pen. The right pick for dry, indoor PAT work.
• Gloss paper: brighter colour, but best for fully pre-printed labels, because pen ink sits on the surface.
• Waterproof polypropylene with a matt laminate: for lofts, garages, meter boxes, outdoor isolators and anything handled a lot. Write on it with a permanent marker, not a ballpoint.

Paper PAT labels start at 48 per pack and polypropylene at 1,000, so a sole trader testing a few offices will usually buy paper. Our guide to paper or polypropylene labels goes further.

Isolation, warning and installation labels #

• Isolation “Do Not Switch On”: 96 × 45 mm or 96 × 68 mm, from £27.47, for the isolator or breaker turned off for safe working. A label is not a lock: it says why the circuit is off and who to ask, so use it with your lock-off kit.
• Voltage Warning: 62 × 33 mm or 96 × 45 mm, from £27.22, for enclosures and covers where the voltage would not be expected.
• EV Charger: 110 × 75 mm, from £27.22, paper packs from 8. Shows the installer, the isolator position and a service contact.
• Emergency Lighting Test (62 × 33 mm or 76 × 51 mm, from £27.22) and Fire Alarm Test (96 × 68 mm, from £27.67) for maintenance contracts.
• Appliance Installed By (96 × 68 mm, from £27.67) and Do Not Use / Out of Service (110 × 75 mm, from £27.22).

Electrical safety signs for plant rooms and switchgear #

Not all labels and signs for electricians are small. Labels mark the installation; signs warn people about the room or the equipment. Our electrical safety signs use the ISO 7010 W012 electricity symbol in a yellow triangle, with messages such as Danger Electric Shock Risk, Danger High Voltage, Danger of Death, Caution 240 Volts, Danger 415 Volts and Danger Buried Cables. They come in A4 (210 × 297 mm) to A1 (594 × 841 mm) on 3 mm Foamex, 3 mm Dibond or self-adhesive vinyl, from £5.28.

As a guide we allow about 1 metre of viewing distance for every 25 mm of sign height: A4 reads at about 8 m, A3 about 12 m, A2 about 17 m and A1 about 24 m. Vinyl suits smooth cabinet doors, Foamex suits indoor walls, and Dibond is the one for outdoor fences and external plant. For a switch room door, Danger High Voltage No Admittance comes in strips of 200 × 50 mm, 250 × 75 mm and 297 × 100 mm, from £4.01.

The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 call for a safety sign where a significant risk remains after other controls, and your risk assessment decides where. Van signs for electricians #

Magnetic van signs are printed on 900µ magnetic sheeting in our Manchester workshop. A2 (420 × 594 mm) starts from £19.32, with 900 × 450 mm, 1000 × 500 mm and 1000 × 600 mm for longer panels, and Standard production is 5 working days. Car door magnetic signs start from £15.89.

Keep the layout simple: company name, your trade in a few words, a large phone number and your registration number as text. Scheme logos are licensed to members, so we print the number rather than the logo. Take the magnet off every few days, clean and dry the panel, and keep it clear of lights and the number plate. Paperwork: job sheets, invoices and cards #

NCR invoice books are A5 with 50 numbered sets per book, in 2, 3 or 4 parts, from £45.72. They take longer than labels (Saver 12, Standard 10, Express 9 working days to dispatch), so reorder before the last book runs out. Business cards are 85 × 55 mm on 350gsm or 450gsm silk card, from £20.
