Workplace safety signs for every type of hazard
In Great Britain, the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 expect employers to put up a sign wherever a risk cannot be avoided or controlled in other ways. A sign does not replace other controls. It warns people about the risk that is left. Your risk assessment, and your fire risk assessment for escape routes, tells you which signs you need and where they go.
The range is split by job, so you can go straight to what you need:
- Fire safety signs for exits, assembly points and fire equipment
- Warning signs for forklifts, trip hazards and hot surfaces
- Prohibition signs and mandatory signs for what people must or must not do
- Electrical safety signs and chemical and hazard signs for high-risk areas
What the colours and shapes mean
| Type | Shape and colour | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Prohibition | Red circle with diagonal bar | You must not do this |
| Mandatory | Blue circle, white symbol | You must do this |
| Warning | Yellow triangle, black border | Take care, there is a hazard |
| Safe condition | Green square or rectangle | The way to safety or first aid |
| Fire equipment | Red square or rectangle | Where fire fighting equipment is |
Where a sign uses an ISO 7010 symbol, the product page shows its code, for example W014 for forklift trucks, so you can match it to your risk assessment.
Sign materials: Foamex, Dibond and vinyl
Most designs come in three materials, all printed full colour on one side:
- 3mm Foamex: rigid PVC foam board, light and easy to fix to indoor walls and doors.
- 3mm Dibond aluminium composite: aluminium skins over a plastic core. It stays flat outdoors and does not rot or rust.
- Self-adhesive vinyl: sticks straight onto smooth surfaces such as doors, machines and glass.
The school, park and community range is made in 3.5mm Correx, 5mm Foamex and 3mm Dibond for outdoor rules signs.

How to choose the right safety sign
Size by viewing distance
We allow about 1 metre of viewing distance for every 25 mm of the sign's shorter side. That gives A4 (210 x 297 mm) about 8 m, A3 (297 x 420 mm) about 12 m, A2 (420 x 594 mm) about 17 m and A1 (594 x 841 mm) about 24 m. In poor light, or where people move quickly, go up a size.
Material by location
Indoors, Foamex or vinyl is usually enough. Outside, or anywhere the sign has to last for years, choose Dibond. Our Foamex, Dibond or Correx guide compares them side by side.
Artwork and custom wording
Every design here is ready to print, so there is nothing to upload. If you cannot find the wording you need, tell us the message and size and we will quote it. For your own sign files, supply 300 dpi artwork at full size, add 3 mm bleed and keep text 10 mm inside the edge, as set out in our artwork guidelines.
Production and delivery
Safety signs are ready to dispatch 5 working days after your order and artwork are confirmed. Our Manchester team checks every file will print well before anything is printed. We are not VAT registered, so prices are final. UK mainland delivery is £7.95 per order and free on orders of £99 and over (goods total after discounts). Oversize items (banners over 3 m on any side, boards larger than A0) add £15 per order. Mainland Scottish Highlands add £10 per order. The Scottish islands, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and the Isles of Scilly are quoted, so contact us before ordering. Full details are on the delivery page.

Safety Signs: questions answered
Are safety signs a legal requirement in the UK?
Under the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996, employers must provide a safety sign where a risk cannot be avoided or adequately controlled by other means. Signs warn about the risk that remains. Your risk assessment tells you which signs you need and where to put them.
What are the five types of safety sign?
Prohibition signs use a red circle with a bar, mandatory signs a blue circle, and warning signs a yellow triangle. Safe condition signs are green squares or rectangles, such as fire exits and first aid. Fire equipment signs are red squares or rectangles showing where extinguishers and call points are.
What size safety sign do I need?
Allow about 1 metre of viewing distance for every 25 mm of the shorter side. An A4 sign reads at about 8 m, A3 at 12 m, A2 at 17 m and A1 at 24 m. Go a size up in poor light or where people are moving fast.
Which material should I choose for a safety sign?
For indoor walls and doors, 3mm Foamex or self-adhesive vinyl is usually enough. For outdoor signs or signs that need to stay up for years, choose 3mm Dibond aluminium composite, which stays flat and does not rot or rust.
Can you make a safety sign that is not in the range?
Yes. Tell us the wording and size you need and we will quote it. You can call 0161 315 1151 or use the contact form. Custom artwork gets the same free file check as the ready-made designs.
Is VAT added to safety sign prices?
No. We are not VAT registered, so no VAT is added at checkout. The price shown for the design, size and material you choose is the final price for the sign itself, with delivery shown separately at checkout.
