A paper sizes in mm: A0 to A7

A paper sizes in mm run from A0 (841 × 1189 mm) down to A7 (74 × 105 mm), and each size is exactly half the one above it. A4 is 210 × 297 mm, A3 is 297 × 420 mm and A5 is 148 × 210 mm. Below is the full chart in millimetres and centimetres, what we print in each size, and the document sizes to use when you add bleed.

Sizes are always written short side first, so “A4, 210 × 297 mm” is the same sheet whether you use it upright or on its side.

How the A series works #

The A series is set by the international standard ISO 216. It starts with A0, a sheet with an area of one square metre, and every sheet has sides in the ratio 1 : 1.414 (the square root of 2). Cut or fold a sheet in half across its long side and you get the next size down, with exactly the same shape:

• two A4 sheets side by side make an A3;
• an A4 folded in half is A5;
• an A1 poster is four A3 sheets, and an A0 is sixteen A4 sheets.

Because the shape never changes, artwork designed for one A size scales up or down to another without stretching or cropping. An A4 layout will enlarge to A1 cleanly, as long as the images have enough resolution for the bigger size.

Some examples with live from-prices: flyers come in A7 to A3 from £19.42, poster printing covers A5 to A0 from £20.42, and Correx boards run from A4 (from £20.88) to A0 (from £87.50). NCR invoice books are A5, NCR pads come in A4, and NCR sets come in A5 or A4.

Sizes that sit alongside the A series #

DL

DL is 99 × 210 mm, one third of an A4 sheet. It fits a standard DL envelope and a leaflet rack, which is why it is a favourite size for price lists and door-drop flyers.

Square sizes

Our flyers also come in 148 × 148 mm and 210 × 210 mm, which share a side with A5 and A4. They suit invitations and menus, but they will not fit a DL envelope.

C envelopes

C sizes are made to hold A sizes. Our printed envelopes come in DL (220 × 110 mm, for A4 folded in three), C5 (229 × 162 mm, for A5 flat or A4 folded once) and C4 (324 × 229 mm, for A4 flat).

A paper sizes in mm with bleed #

If your design runs to the edge of the page, set up the document with 3 mm of bleed on every edge, which adds 6 mm to each measurement. Keep text at least 10 mm inside the trim on signs and boards.

Portrait or landscape #

Portrait (upright) is the default for posters, flyers and most signs. Landscape (on its side) suits wide photos, directional signs and menu boards. The paper is the same; only the layout changes. On the product page you choose the size, and your artwork sets the orientation, so an A3 sign can be 297 × 420 mm upright or 420 × 297 mm wide. Some products list landscape separately, such as Foamex strut cards in A4 landscape and A3 landscape.

Choosing between A sizes #

As a rough guide to A paper sizes in mm and where each one works best:

• Handouts and door drops: A6 or A5, which fit a hand, a letterbox and a counter.
• Notices on a wall or door: A4 or A3, read from a few metres.
• Posters and pavement signs: A2 or A1, read from across a shop or a street.
• Site and event boards: A1 or A0, read from a car or across a car park.
