Roller banner sizes and buying guide

Roller banner sizes are simpler than they look: every standard roller banner is 2000 mm tall, and the choice is mainly about width. A roller banner (also called a pull-up or roll up banner) is a printed graphic that rolls into a base and pulls up onto a pole in under a minute. This guide covers the choices you make when ordering one: width, stand, material and artwork.

Roller banner sizes at a glance #

All our roller banners are 2000 mm tall, which puts your logo and headline at eye level. The UK trade sells roller banners in millimetres, so the width comes first here, with feet and inches as a guide:

When people talk about the “standard” roller banner size in the UK they usually mean 850 × 2000 mm. If you are not sure, start there: it suits most spaces and most layouts.

How to choose between roller banner sizes #

1. Measure the floor space. Allow the width of the banner plus about 10 cm either side for the base feet, and check there is room for people to walk past.
2. Check the ceiling. A 2000 mm banner needs a little over 2 m of clear height once it is on the pole.
3. Think about what you want to say. A logo, a headline and three short points fit an 850 mm banner comfortably. A photo plus a list of services is easier on 1000 mm or wider.
4. Think about how many you will use together. Two or three 850 mm banners side by side can make a wall behind a stand and are easier to carry than one wide banner.

Choosing a stand #

The stand (the base cassette the graphic rolls into) comes in three levels:

• Budget: a light stand for occasional use, such as a one-off event or a banner that stays in one place.
• Standard Plus: a sturdier everyday stand for regular use at events and in reception areas.
• Premium: the top of the range, the one to choose if the banner will be set up and packed away often.

Whether a carry bag is included depends on the stand, so ask us if you need one.

Choosing a material #

440gsm banner vinyl is the standard choice and prints bright, sharp colours. 610gsm blockout PVC has a grey layer inside that stops light shining through from behind, so the print stays solid in front of windows and bright lights. Choose blockout roller banners if yours will stand in front of a window or a spotlight.

Artwork tips for every roller banner size #

• Put your logo and main message in the top half. The bottom 150 to 200 mm can be hidden by the base or by a table, so keep it clear of text.
• Use a short headline that can be read from a few metres away. Contact details and a web address work best in the middle.
• Design at full size, 850 × 2000 mm for example, with images at around 150 dpi at that size.
• Keep important text away from the side edges on narrow sizes; 30 to 40 mm clear either side looks tidy.
• Use your brand colours, but check text contrast: light grey on white is hard to read across a busy hall.

Setting up and packing away #

1. Stand the base on a flat floor and swing out the feet.
2. Assemble the pole and slot it into the base.
3. Pull the graphic up slowly by the top rail and hook the rail onto the pole.
4. To pack away, unhook the rail and guide it down; do not let the spring snap the graphic back into the base.

Store the banner rolled in its base, somewhere dry. Rolled graphics that are kept damp or crushed can curl or crease.

Roller banners are made for indoor use. Outside, even a light wind can tip them over, so choose a flag or a banner that can be tied down.

Safety at events #

At a venue, place banners where they cannot block fire exits, walkways or signs, and keep them clear of doorways that people will use in a hurry. Event organisers often have their own rules, and the HSE gives general advice on running events safely.

Common questions #

What is the standard roller banner size in the UK?

850 × 2000 mm is the most common size. 800 × 2000 mm is a close alternative, and 1000 mm and wider sizes give more space for images.

What size is a pull up banner in feet?

An 850 × 2000 mm pull up banner is about 2 ft 9 in wide and 6 ft 7 in tall. A 1500 × 2000 mm banner is about 4 ft 11 in wide.

Can I replace just the graphic?

The graphic is fitted into the base cassette, so replacing it means re-rolling a new print into the stand. Ask us about your stand before you order a replacement print.

How far away can people read a roller banner?

A headline with capital letters about 80 to 100 mm tall reads comfortably across a room or exhibition aisle. Smaller text is for people standing close to the banner.

Are roller banners the same as pull up or roll up banners?

Yes. Roller banner, pull up banner and roll up banner are three names for the same thing: a printed graphic that rolls into a base and is held up by a pole. The sizes and stands are the same whichever name you use.

How many roller banners do I need for an exhibition stand?

A common rule is one banner for every 1 to 1.5 metres of back wall you want to cover. For a 3 metre stand, two or three 850 × 2000 mm banners side by side work well and are easy to carry.
