Caution Sign

This Caution sign gives people clear information where they need it. It is typically used in offices, shops, warehouses and public buildings. The design uses a yellow warning triangle with black text, with the ISO 7010 W001 (General warning sign) symbol.

The CAUTION header flags a hazard people need to look out for; the text underneath says exactly what it is.

The legal background: the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 require employers to provide a safety sign where a risk cannot be avoided or controlled by other means. Warning signs use a yellow triangle with a black border.

You can have it printed on 3mm Foamex (rigid PVC foam board), light and easy to fix indoors or for short-term outdoor use, 3mm Dibond aluminium composite, rigid and weatherproof for long-term outdoor use and self-adhesive vinyl for smooth walls, doors, glass and equipment. Indoors, Foamex or vinyl is usually all you need.

Choosing a size: we allow about 1 metre of viewing distance for every 25mm of sign height, based on the distance-factor method in ISO 3864-1. That gives A4 (210 x 297 mm) (reads at about 8 m), A3 (297 x 420 mm) (reads at about 12 m), A2 (420 x 594 mm) (reads at about 17 m), A1 (594 x 841 mm) (reads at about 24 m).

Where to put it: At eye level where people will act on it.
